On this #NationalFarmAnimalDay, I am remembering Teresa, a sweet and gentle Yorkshire pig who I met and photographed while working on #allowedtogrowold. She was rescued en route to a slaughterhouse after being reared on a factory farm in North Carolina. Thanks to those who rescued her and to @FarmSanctuary, Teresa was allowed to grow old in peace. She experienced love and comfort in her life, and formed close friendships with several pigs and her human caregivers. I met her when she was 13 years old. She lived for another two years after that. Although Teresa endured trauma early in her life, she was extremely lucky and found freedom. Most pigs reared on factory farms lead brief miserable lives that end in terror and bloodshed. Each year 121 million pigs are slaughtered. The Trump Administration has proposed new inspection rules at slaughterhouses that would significantly reduce the number of trained government inspectors and instead relegate most of the oversight to untrained plant managers. Their aim is to increase the speed at which slaughters occur, which will be lead to rougher and more violent handling of terrified animals and increased worker injuries. The public will also be at increased risk for food borne illnesses like salmonella. Please contact your elected officials to oppose these proposed new rules. #vegan #farmanimals #someonenotsomething #pigs #vegansofig #animalrights #animaladvocate #isaleshko #farmsanctuary #farmsanctuarylife
