I'm perfectly aware I'm lucky to be aging. It's obvious what the alternative is. . Growing older means accumulating experiences and wisdom and having as much time as possible with those whom we love. This is unquestionably a privilege. . What I'm trying to express in this @newbeauty cover article is what it feels like (for me personally) to become invisible due to aging when my whole life I've been told that how I look is the most important thing about me. . Sure, more so because I was a model, but I believe every girl is told what her value is based on how pretty she is.  Maybe this is not told to her by her parents or family — her peers and society in general certainly tell her this. . A woman's prettiness as her primary value in society is not a new construct; it goes back to the start of recorded history. . At my age now, I'm trying to balance the wonder of aging with the unfairness of being a woman in her prime who's being dismissed as a has-been on the basis of her looks. No wonder we all rush to do something "little' or "big" to stay looking younger. It's not about death for us women, it's about relevance, about being heard, about having a presence at the table of life without having to sit in a corner eating leftovers. . @newbeauty magazine on stands Tuesday.
